What is Homeopathy?

Homeopathy is a method of treatment that supports the body's own healing mechanism. It 's based on the law of similars "like cures like". A homeopathic remedy is an extremely pure, natural substance that has been diluted many times. In large quantities these subtances would cause the same symptoms the patient is trying to cure. In small, pure, diluted doses, it is not only safe and free from side effects, but it will trigger the body to heal itself. Example: Allium cepa is a remedy that is used for watery eyes and runny nose, it is created from red onion. If you've cut open a red onion you'll notice the same symptoms. When the body creates a similar "symptom picture" to Allium cepa and you take a dose of Allium cepa, it activates the body to go about the process of stopping watery eyes and a runny nose.

Homeopathic remedies are regulated and manufactured under strict quality controls by the United States Food and Drug Administration-FDA. Homeopathic remedies come in several forms tablets, powders, liquids and ointments. Tablets are the most common and popular. Tablets are sugar pills with the liquid remedy infused. They are taken sublingually (dissolved under the tongue).

What is the Difference Between
Homeopathy and a Vaccination?

A vaccination infects the person with the actual disease. This is why some people may get sick from the vaccination. Homeopathy on the other hand uses a remedy that will produce similar symptoms to the disease. In fact homeopathic remedies can be very useful to offset negative reactions to vaccinations.

How Do I Select A Remedy?

The important part of selecting the correct remedy is to 'match' the symptom picture of the remedy as closely to your own symptoms. Symptom pictures, or descriptions of symptoms take into account the condition of the whole person, not just one symptom. If two remedies seem to be very close and hard to decide between, pick the one that best matches your most annoying symptom.

Potency

Homeopathic remedies are classified into three levels of potencies. X,C and M refer to 10, 100 and 1,000 in terms of the amount of dilution. The confusing and amazing aspect of Homeopathy is that the more a tincture is diluted, the more potent it becomes. So, while a C is more dilute than an X, the C is more potent. The M classification is very potent and is usually prescribed by Homeopathic physicians.

Homeopathic remedies begin with part of the original substance dissolved in alcohol, called the mother tincture. The mother tincture is then diluted many times. After each dilution the solution is shaken or "succussed", this shaking activates the remedy. The solution is then made into pills, powders, tinctures or creams. A 1X potency is created by mixing 1 part of the mother tincture and 9 parts alcohol or distilled water. In each successive number (increasing the potency 2X, 3X, 6X ), 1 part is taken from the previous potency and diluted according to the new potency.
Example: A 3X remedy (10x10x10=1000) has one part of the 2X remedy to 999 parts of alcohol or distilled water.

What does this mean to you when you are trying to select the remedy and potency?
1) The higher the potency (30th potency) the more confident you need to be that you have selected the correct remedy.
2) Use the lower potency (6th potency) when you are uncertain of the remedy.
3) Higher potencies take less doses. Lower potencies take more doses.
4) A general rule is double the C potency number to get the equivalent X potency.
             15C = 30X
              6C = 12X

How Do I Take A Homeopathic Remedy?

The remedies should be kept in cool, dark place. Be careful not to touch the tablets when taking them, pour the tablets into the cap and then into your mouth. Allowing them to dissolve under your tongue. Always follow the recommend dosage on the packaging.

There are just few guidelines to consider when using Homeopathy. Certain foods, substances or odors are thought to interfere, or antidote the action of the remedy. Garlic, onions and caffeine should be avoided. The use or smell of strong perfumes, eucalyptus, menthol or anything minty, (baking soda can be a good alternative for toothpaste). Also avoid eating anything 15 minutes before or after taking a remedy.

These are only guidelines, not hard and fast rules. Some people feel that these things greatly interfere with the remedy, others do not. It is just a matter of finding out how sensitive you are.

Typically only one remedy is taken at a time. Although when you go to the store to purchase a remedy you will undoubtedly see combinations of remedies, packaged to treat a sore throat, or flu. Here again, there seems to be two schools of thought on the subject, and again it is up to you to decide what works best for you.

Homeopathic remedies can be found in most health food stores, and are starting to be carried in regular pharmacies. You can also get them through mail order.

How Do I Know if its Working?

There are several ways the body reacts to homeopathy.

1) Physical symptoms get a little worse, but the mental state improves. Later the physical symptoms improve.

2) Most common reaction is improvement of mental and physical symptoms. Often the improvement is rapid, 20-45min..

3) The patient starts to feel better, then progress seems to level off or decline. If the symptoms are still the same then take another dose of the same remedy.

4) The patient starts to feel better, then progress seems to level off or decline. If the symptoms have changed since the initial remedy, select a new remedy.

5) The patient does not improve, feels worse or the physical symptoms improve but the mental state is worse. These reactions could signal a few things. The incorrect remedy was selected initially. The illness is due more to a constitutional imbalance. Depending on the seriousness of the condition; try selecting a remedy again, or see a doctor.

The rule of thumb is if there is improvement the patient should be left alone. While Homeopathy is safe, over-prescribing can be a problem, as it can confuse the symptom picture. We tend to think; if a little is good - more is better. With Homeopathy a little goes a long way. Be patient, and watch the symptoms.

So Is Homeopathy Just For Runny Noses?

Homeopathy can be used to treat not just acute illness, but it can also be used to strengthen and support the immune system by means of constitutional remedies. A constitutional remedy is one that works on a deep cellular level to bring the body and emotions back into state of health and balance. By doing so it makes the whole system more resistant to disease. To find your constitutional remedy you will need to see a trained Homeopathic Physician. They will ask you many of questions, some may seem irrelevant, like what kinds of foods do you crave, or if you prefer the mountains or the seashore. And don't be surprised if you are given a single dose. Constitutional remedies are deep and long acting. Many people find that it is useful to get a "constitutional tune-up" once a year or at the change of the seasons.

Lack of Confidence

Do you worry before walking into a room full of strangers?
Does a lack of confidence hold you back in your life?
Do you become tongue tied at crucial moments?

Then you are not alone.
Many people experience a lack of confidence at one time or another, and many more constantly struggle with the difficulties that a lack of confidence can bring.

What is Confidence?
The socially confident believe that they “get on with people” or are “good” at making conversation and listening. People who are confident at work will take on a difficult task knowing that it is a “challenge” so they will enjoy “problem solving”. We often taken for granted what we are good at – listening, finances, raising a family, our jobs etc, but because we live with it we some how believe ourselves to be ordinary, not appreciating that we have exceptional qualities envied by others.

We all experience confidence individually. Confident people tend to display certain qualities that demonstrate that they believe in themselves, they are relaxed with what they are doing, they have the knowledge/skills/ability that allows them to deal with whatever life throws at them…..or can they?

Even the most confident of people have experienced a lack of confidence at times, it is the way that they handle it that is different. Confidence is not a constant and whilst we experience it in a number of areas of our life where we feel comfortable and know what is expected of us, it is when we are faced with something new or where we have perhaps had a bad experience in the past that our confidence can suddenly dip.

How does a lack of confidence come about & what are the effects?
Anna Freud once said "I was always looking outside myself for strength and confidence but it comes from within. It is there all the time.“ People who experience a dip or lack of confidence will experience various emotions from self doubt, fear, anger, helplessness, feeling flustered, to physical things like having a dry mouth and wobbly knees.

Experiences such as lack of encouragement (managers, parents, social group), a perception of experiencing bad luck continuously, being criticised etc. all help to develop a lack of confidence in one or more areas. Added to this there is invariably some sort of internal commentary going on that exacerbates the situation such as “I’ll never get ahead”, “everyone else does it/is better than me”.

Negative thinking and past experience are probably the 2 biggest Confidence Zappers around. Overcoming negative thinking is not as easy as it sounds, just telling yourself to think positively does not always result in the belief that is necessary to make you feel better. Similarly, if a past experience was bad enough, no matter how much you tell yourself everything will be fine, there is still always that little element of doubt “what if”.

So we play it safe, avoiding risks, challenges and new situations, relationships may suffer as negative comments about yourself seem to be reinforced by how others treat you, and of course consistent lack of confidence leads to low self esteem and potentially poor health – all of which can have an impact on how we live our lives.

Why do negative emotional characteristics exist? We inherit certain personality traits just as we inherit certain physical features. The way we react to life's experiences leads to the development of emotional patterns of behavior.

Homeopathic remedies can assist people who want to work on their emotional, mental and spiritual growth and development. The remedies can help people who strive to achieve a more positive mindset and a feeling of well being. Negative moods, thoughts and actions can bring about imbalances. Personality traits, such as impatience, fear, depression, bitterness, lack of self-confidence or motivation affect a person's vitality and can adversely affect health.

Homeopathic remedies do not profoundly change the personality of the individual. It is individual differences which make life so rich. Homeopathic remedies help to restore balance within the personality. For example, a chronic worrier can become an occasional worrier, a highly critical and judgmental person can become more tolerant, and a person with a poor self-image can gain more self-confidence.

Homeopathy

Overview

What is homeopathy?

In the late 18th century, a German physician named Samuel Hahnemann came upon a passage claiming that the quinine-containing Peruvian bark (chinchona) cured malaria. Using himself as a subject, Hahnemann swallowed a dose of Peruvian bark. He began to feel feverish, drowsy, desperately thirsty, and agitated—all of which he recognized as symptoms of malaria. This caused Hahnemann to experiment further and form his theory that like cures like, or the Law of Similars. This law states that when a substance in large doses causes certain symptoms, in small doses it can cure these same symptoms. Some treatments in conventional medicine rely on this like-cures-like principle; vaccines, for instance, introduce small doses of an illness-causing agent to prevent disease.

Other important principles of homeopathy are dilution and succussion. Remedies are diluted and then "succussed," or shaken, in order to increase their potency. The process of successive dilution and succussion is called potentization.

How does homeopathy work?

Homeopathic remedies start with simple substances, such as herbs, minerals, or animal products. These substances are first crushed and dissolved in a specified amount of a substance—usually grain alcohol or lactose, mechanically shaken, then stored. This is the "mother tincture." Homeopaths further dilute tinctures with alcohol or lactose, either 1 part to 10 (written as "x") or 1 part to 100 (written as "c"), and then succuss these tinctures, yielding a 1x or 1c dilution. Homeopaths can even further dilute these tinctures two times (2x or 2c), three times (3x or 3c), and so forth. In clinical practice, any dilution may be used, but the most common are the 6x, 12x, and 30x and 6c, 12c, and 30c. The more diluted the substance, the more potent its healing powers are thought to be.

Rather than simply suppressing symptoms of a disease, homeopathic remedies act as catalysts that aid the body's inherent healing mechanisms. Moreover, homeopaths believe that any physical disease has a mental and emotional component. The homeopathic diagnosis is threefold, including physical symptoms (e.g., feverish), current emotional and psychological state (e.g., anxious, restless), and overall constitution of the individual (this includes more enduring qualities related to a person's creativity, initiative, persistence, concentration, physical sensitivities, stamina). The right remedy for a particular condition addresses all of these aspects and requires a highly individualized diagnosis.

Homeopathy is also used like other remedies, that is, according to symptoms. Health-food stores and some pharmacies sell homeopathic remedies for a variety of problems. Remedies are usually taken for no more than 2 or 3 days, though some people require only one or two doses before starting to feel better. If a remedy fails, it may be because it was the wrong substance for the set of symptoms.

What happens during a visit to the homeopath?

An initial visit to the homeopath can take from 1 to 1½ hours. Because homeopaths treat the person rather than the illness, the practitioner interviews the person at length, asking many questions and observing personality traits as well as unusual behavioral and physical symptoms. Determining the person's condition also includes a physical examination and possibly laboratory work.

What illnesses and conditions respond well?

Conditions that respond particularly well to homeopathic treatment include asthma, diarrhea, eczema and other types of skin rashes, depression, anxiety, hot flashes, chronic fatigue syndrome, and otitis media (ear infection).

How can I find a qualified practitioner?

About 25 homeopathic schools and training programs exist in the U.S., most of which offer 2- to 4-year programs. However, no diploma or certificate from any school provides a license to practice. Many homeopaths are also medical doctors, although there are homeopaths licensed in virtually every health-profession category, including veterinarians. In most states, practitioners must be licensed healthcare providers to legally practice homeopathy. Several respected certification agencies exist. The American Board of Homeotherapeutics certifies MDs and DOs (doctors of osteopathic medicine) who have specialized in homeopathy (DHt is the indicator of a doctor of homeopathy). Naturopaths study homeopathy extensively as part of their medical training and are certified by the Homeopathic Academy of Naturopathic Physicians (DHANP). All homeopathic practitioners, including chiropractors, nurse practitioners, and acupuncturists, can apply for Certification in Classical Homeopathy (CCH).

There are a number of directories listing homeopathic providers. To locate one in your area use the web directory located at http://www.homeopathicdirectory.com/ or the directory of the National Center for Homeopathy at http://www.homeopathic.org/. You may also contact the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians at 877-969-2267 or visit their website at http://www.naturopathic.org/ to find a qualified naturopath who specializes in homeopathy, or the North American Society of Homeopaths at http://www.homeopathy.org/. Other useful sources of information on homeopathy include Homeopathic Educational Services in Berkeley, California, located on the web at http://www.homeopathic.com.

Does my medical insurance usually cover homeopathy?

Insurance companies are more likely to cover homeopathy when the person providing the service is a licensed healthcare professional, such as an MD or DO who also practices homeopathy.
